PRIVY-MARKED MAPLE LEAF SILVER COINS
Canadian Privy Maple Leaf Silver Coins
The most popular Canadian silver coin is the Silver Maple Leaf. This outstanding piece of the Canadian coinage is also minted in limited editions. Every year, The Royal Canadian Mint stamps millions of Silver Maple Leafs, but on occasions, the Mint also produces its official silver coin in Maple Leaf Privy editions, having unique privy marks which honor items of Canadian cultural significance, historical moments or nature related themes.
Each of these minted editions is limited making these coins extremely scarce and desired. Each coin is struck from 99.99% pure silver and has been issued a face value of $5 (CAD) back by the Canadian government. It also features the same design as the usual Silver Maple Leaf coins: the image of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and the national Canadian symbol on the reverse. The only difference is that it features the privy mark on the bottom of the reverse side.
Two of the most famous privy editions are the Anniversaries and Zodiac series, consisting of two separate runs. The Zodiac series are represented by specific Zodiac animals of each year, starting with the year of Tiger, being issued of 25,000 items/annually in the first run and 85,000 items/annually during the second run. Some Canadian Privy Silver Maple Leafs are certified by the Professional Coin Grading Service or the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coin also features enhanced security characteristics against counterfeiting: micro-laser engraved inscriptions and radial lines.
