History Of Proof Silver Eagles

First released in 1986, the Silver Eagle Proof coins are made out of the finest silver. The coins are stamped multiple times using special dies in order to showcase a unique and extremely fine mirror-like finish, which is highly appreciated by collectors. Each die is examined under a special microscope and polished manually using three diamond dust types to ensure sharp detailing. The Proof Silver Eagles blanks are individually washed and inserted manually into the press to be struck multiple times and receive their iconic polish.

These coins are exclusively produced by the uS Mint, whose employees who wear special white gloves in order to not damage the surface of these outstanding coins. The Proof Silver Eagles are firmly sealed and sold in special boxes to preserve their value, along with their certificate of authenticity provided by the US Mint. Each coin is made of .999 fine silver with its weight, content, and purity guaranteed by the United States Government. Proof Eagle coins are also available in NGC and PCGS certified holders as well as in gold versions.

Design Of Proof Silver Eagles

All American Silver Eagle coins have the same design. The obverse of the Proof Silver Eagle depicts Adolph A. Weinman’s design of “Walking Liberty”- a full-length profile of the Lady Liberty in stride. She has her right hand outstretched while she grasps laurel and oak branches in her left hand. Her figure is enveloped by the American flag and she appears to be bathed in the rays of the sun. This design was originally used on Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollar coins issued between 1916 and 1947. The “Walking Liberty” is one of the most cherished designs amongst US silver coins. The obverse side of Proof Silver Eagles also features the inscriptions “Liberty” and “In God We Trust”, along with its year of issue.

The reverse of the silver proof coins depicts the national American symbol of pride, freedom, and patriotism – the heraldic eagle. It has its wings outstretched and is perched behind a shield holding arrows in its left talon and olive branches in its right. This design was created by the remarkable John Mercanti, sculptor and chief engraver of the US Mint in 1986. The eagle is also surrounded by the depiction of 13 stars, representing the original 13 US colonies, and the inscriptions “United States of America”, “W” mintmark, and the coin’s weight, purity, and denomination.
